Rainbow Bridge
North of Interstate 76 on Hwy. 52 in Fort Morgan
Rainbow Bridge Brochure
The Rainbow Bridge in Fort Morgan, one of the famous Marsh Arch Bridges, is one of the largest in the United States and the only one of this type in Colorado. This reinforced concrete 11 arch bridge, spanning the South Platte River, was built in 1923 and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Additionally, in 1992 it was designated a Colorado Civil Engineering Landmark. This bridge has survived major floods and in 1935 braced a 10 foot wall of water virtually undamaged. Today it is used for foot traffic and offers a beautiful view of the South Platte River.

Scenic Byway – Pawnee Pioneer Trails
North of Fort Morgan on Hwy. 52
View Website Here
Pawnee Pioneer Trails Byway retraces the steps of the old Native American and pioneer trails across the open plains. What once was inhabited by Plains Indians and buffalo was later traveled by fur trappers, frontiersman, cattle ranchers, and homesteaders as they settled through the land, creating many railroad towns. Check out this map by Colorado Scenic and Historic Byways so you can take part to discover and travel through this scenic byway trail coming right through Morgan County!
The best time to visit the Pawnee Buttes is in the spring or fall, when the temperatures are milder. In the early mornings and evenings, the bright colors painted across the sky add to the artwork of the sandstone towers. The Pawnee Buttes trail is open year round; however, there is a nearby closure annually from March 1 – June 30 to protect any nesting raptors.

This byway traverses the rugged Colorado Piedmont, a wide-open region anchored by the towering Pawnee Buttes. The landscape provides refuge for coyotes, prairie dogs, rattlesnakes, pronghorn antelope, and hundreds of bird species.

Texas-Montana Trail
At the corner of S. Clayton Street and Ellsworth in Brush, CO.
Brush was developed as a railhead for Burlington Northern Railroad in the late 1800’s and was incorporated in Weld County on October 18, 1884. The Texas-Montana cattle trail passed through Brush along Clayton Street. Originally a cattle shipping point off the railroad, Brush is still known as a major livestock center but has since diversified its agricultural industry to include oil wells, energy, and health care. It is estimated that 20,000 to 30,000 steers were kept upon this range. Each year 10,000 to 15,000 were driven north to replace those shipped to Chicago. The massive amount of cattle that were driven from the panhandle of Texas all the way up to Montana to be fed, then shipped off to Chicago to be processed, was truly an amazing feat. The log shows how slow things moved on the trail, lasting from “April 20, 1892”-“July 26 1892” then having to reload on supplies and turn around and head back to Texas.
